Estimating the mass of vortices in the cuprate superconductors
نویسندگان
چکیده
We explore the experimental implications of a recent theory of the quantum dynamics of vortices in superfluids proximate to Mott insulators. The theory predicts modulations in the local density of states in the regions over which the vortices execute their quantum zero point motion. We use the spatial extent of such modulations in scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements (Hoffman et al , Science 295, 466 (2002)) on the vortex lattice of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ to estimate the inertial mass of a point vortex. We discuss other, more direct, experimental signatures of the vortex dynamics.

Detecting the quantum zero-point motion of vortices in the cuprate superconductors
We explore the experimental implications of a recent theory of the quantum dynamics of vortices in two-dimensional superfluids proximate to Mott insulators. The theory predicts modulations in the local density of states in the regions over which the vortices execute their quantum zero point motion. We use the spatial extent of such modulations in scanning tunnelling microscopy measurements (Hof...
متن کاملEffects of quasiparticle ambipolarity on the nernst effect in underdoped cuprate superconductors.
We consider the Nernst effect in the normal state of the underdoped cuprate superconductors, where recent quantum oscillation experiments have indicated the existence of Fermi surface pockets and quasiparticle ambipolarity in the excitation spectrum. Using an ambipolar d-density-wave model for the pseudogap, we predict a peak in the Nernst coefficient with decreasing temperature below the pseud...

We use magnetic force microscopy to both image and manipulate individual vortex lines threading single crystalline YBa2Cu3O6.4, a layered superconductor. We find that when we pull the top of a pinned vortex, it may not tilt smoothly. Sometimes, we observe a vortex to break into discrete segments that can be described as short stacks of pancake vortices, similar to the “kinked” structure propose...
متن کاملتوضیحاتی درباره نظریههای ابررسانایی دمای بالا
The recently discovered MgB2 superconductors have a record transition temperature for a BCS superconductor due to the high vibration frequencies associated with its light elements. The transition temperatures in the cuprate family of superconductors are much higher but these do not fit the BCS paradigm. The most promising microscopic origin for their many anomalous properties lies in magnetic...
متن کاملSpectroscopic Studies of Quasiparticle Low-Energy Excitations in Cuprate and Iron-Based High-Temperature Superconductors
Recent development in the physics of high-temperature superconductivity is reviewed, with special emphasis on the studies of the low-energy excitations of cuprate and iron-based superconductors. For cuprate superconductors, a phenomenology based on coexisting competing orders with superconductivity in the ground state of these doped Mott insulators is shown to provide a consistent account for a...
